body

LEGISLATIVE INTENT/PURPOSE:

WHEREAS, staff has developed plans and specifications for upcoming drainage Capital Improvement Project (“CIP”) projects; and,

WHEREAS, with construction cost increases experienced through recent projects, staff has identified the NC Land and Water Fund (“NCLWF”) as a grant provider with available funding for projects that improve water quality and natural habitat; and,

WHEREAS, staff has identified the pending Brookshire/Beasley and Wisteria/Clearbrook drainage projects as current City CIP drainage projects that have significant stream restoration elements that meet the NCLWF grant criteria; and,

WHEREAS, one of the NCLWF’s purposes is to fund projects that enhance or restore degraded surface waters, sustain ecological diversity, restore the habitat of fish, wildlife, and other species, and enhance filtering of stormwater runoff to reduce pollutants from entering water supplies; and,

WHEREAS, the NCLWF grant application cycle opens on January 16, 2024, and grant applications are due by March 1, 2024.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:

THAT, the Wilmington City Council hereby authorizes the City Manager to apply for a North Carolina Land and Water Fund grant in the projected amount of $2,000,000 to leverage the available Capital Improvement Project funds.
