Body

LEGISLATIVE INTENT/PURPOSE:

WHEREAS, FEMA Fire Prevention and Safety (“FP&S”) grants are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (“AFG”) and support projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards, and to reduce injury and prevent death among high-risk populations; and,

WHEREAS, cooking related fires are the #1 cause of fires in the City; and,

WHEREAS, funds from the FP&S grant would be used to purchase four hundred fifty (450) SmartBurner units (unit = 4 stove eyes), cast iron heat limiting stove eyes, and polish at a cost of $92,050.37, in order to reduce the occurrence of cooking fires in four (4) Wilmington Housing Authority (“WHA”) communities; and,

WHEREAS, if the City receives the requested grant, a local match of $4,478.59 will be required; and,

WHEREAS, this resolution will authorize the City Manager to apply for FEMA FP&S grant funding for equipment that will reduce risk to vulnerable community residents and firefighters alike.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:

THAT, the City Manager is hereby authorized to submit an application to the Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Grant Programs Directorate in the amount of $89,571.78, to include matching funds of $4,478.59 if the grant is awarded.
