Resolution Expressing Support for Full Consideration of Wilmington as the Future Site of the North Carolina Submarine Museum

LEGISLATIVE INTENT/PURPOSE:
WHEREAS, the North Carolina Submarine Museum Foundation has proposed the establishment of a museum in our state to inspire visitors in the wonder that is a nuclear-powered U.S. Navy submarine; and,
WHEREAS, the establishment of the NC Submarine Museum within the City of Wilmington would enhance educational opportunities for residents young and old, promote tourism, and contribute to the economic development of the City; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Wilmington recognizes the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (“STEM”) education, and such a museum in Wilmington would promote understanding of the practical applications, principals, and tools that allow nuclear-powered submarines to operate quietly, safely, and reliably in the depths of all oceans covering our planet; and,
WHEREAS, defense is NC’s second largest industry, and the U.S. Navy forecasts a 10-year shortage of 100,000 skilled workers to build and maintain the already-funded nuclear-powered submarines being developed; and,
WHEREAS, the NC Submarine Museum would contribute to the solution for the Navy’s and the nation’s long-term skilled workforce training need via its STEM Education and Workforce Development Resource Center and Workforce Development Programs; and,
WHEREAS, the NC Submarine Museum would honor the men and women who served aboard the 3 US Navy nuclear-powered submarines named in honor of our state of North Carolina: USS Asheville SSN 758; USS Charlotte SSN 766; and the USS North Carolina SSN 777.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:
THAT, the Wilmington City Council expresses its support for designation of the City of Wilmington as the site for the future North Carolina Submarine Museum and STEM Center.
