Resolution in Support of Naming the Wilmington Police Department’s Virtual Response Unit “The Schwartzel Call Center”

LEGISLATIVE INTENT/PURPOSE:
WHEREAS, the Wilmington Police Department (“WPD”) began a Virtual Response Unit (“VRU”) at the WPD’s Headquarters in 2021; and,
WHEREAS, Sergeant Adam Schwartzel was the first supervisor of the Virtual Response Unit; and,
WHEREAS, Sergeant Adam Schwartzel began his career with WPD in 2002, and served honorably in many capacities for WPD over the years, including taking on the role of the first Supervisor of the newly formed and functioning VRU in 2021; and,
WHEREAS, Sergeant Schwartzel’s knowledge and expertise was instrumental in getting the VRU successfully established and functioning before returning to the Patrol Unit in 2023; and,
WHEREAS, the Wilmington Police Department recognizes the dedication and commitment of Sergeant Schwartzel to the department and citizens of Wilmington until his death in October 2024.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:
THAT, the Wilmington City Council officially endorses and supports the honorary naming of the Wilmington Police Department’s Virtual Response Unit to “The Schwartzel Call Center” in honor of the service and dedication Sergeant Adam Schwartzel made to the Wilmington community over the course of his lifetime.
