PURPOSE:

The purpose of this resolution is to declare Canine Officer Dex as surplus property of the City of Wilmington, and to authorize the City Manager to retire Canine Officer Dex and transfer Dex’s ownership to Sergeant Kendall Murphy.

BACKGROUND:

The Police Department is seeking to retire Canine Officer Dex for humanitarian reasons due to his age and multiple health issues. Dex was purchased by the Wilmington Police Department in 2018 and is now 8 years old. He has served the department faithfully for seven (7) years, assisting in over 300 arrests. Due to his age and health conditions, Canine Officer Dex is no longer able to continue his duties. The Police Department requests that Canine Officer Dex be retired from active duty, and that ownership of Dex be transferred to his handler, Sergeant Kendall Murphy.
