PURPOSE:
This Resolution will establish the filing fees applicable to individuals pursuing election for elected positions in the City of Wilmington.
BACKGROUND:
In accordance with N.C.G.S. §163-294.2(e), City Council has the authority to establish a filing fee for elected positions, which must be determined prior to candidates commencing the filing of their candidacy notices.
State legislation mandates that the minimum filing fee cannot be less than five dollars ($5.00), and must not exceed 1% of the annual salary for the position in question. For the Mayor's position, this maximum is set at $264.86, while for a City Council position, it is capped at $216.42.
The existing filing fees of $125 for the Mayor, and $95 for City Council members, established May 6, 2003, have remained unchanged since that time. It is appropriate to revise these fees in preparation for the 2025 Municipal Elections.
