Resolution |
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this resolution is to utilize funding in the amount of $25,000 from City Council Contingency for a project installation commemorating the American Revolutionary War.
BACKGROUND:
In 2026, the Unites States of America will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. At the April 1, 2025, Wilmington City Council meeting, the Mayor encouraged City Council’s Naming Facilities Committee to work with staff to explore an appropriate way to commemorate this history, and Wilmington’s unique role in the war.
Parks and Recreation staff met with representatives of the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to begin exploration of an artistic installation in a public space adjacent to the Riverwalk. As the project develops, staff will involve other stakeholders, including the Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County, the Commission on African American History, Wilmington Downtown Incorporated and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board with the goal of bringing a design concept to Council’s Naming Facilities Committee for review and ultimate project approval and recommendation to the full City Council.
