Attachment #1: Resolution |
PURPOSE:
This resolution declared Police Mount Comet to be surplus property and authorizes the retirement of Police Mount Comet and transfer of the care and ownership of retired Police Mount Comet to retired mounted police officer Jon Gordon.
BACKGROUND:
Police Mount Comet was purchased by the Wilmington Police Department (WPD) in 2005 when he was 3 years old. Police Mount Comet has honorably served the WPD for over 21 years. At 24 years old, Police Mount Comet is unable to continue his police horse duties, so it is requested that he retire from active service for humanitarian reasons.
It is the tradition of the WPD to retire a law enforcement animal into the care, control, and custody of either their rider or of another officer of the WPD. Retired Mounted Police Officer Jon Gordon was a former rider of Police Mount Comet, and he has expressed a desire and ability to provide of Comet’s post-retirement care and welfare.
