PURPOSE:

The purpose of this ordinance is to appropriate $5,300 from a Cape Fear Garden Club, Inc. (“Garen Club”) grant to the Special Purpose Fund to construct a vegetable and herb garden at Maides Park.

BACKGROUND:

For over 50 years, the Garden Club has awarded the profits from the annual Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour as grants to promote beautification, education and conservation in New Hanover County.

Maides Park is a 15-acre park located on Manly Avenue, which features outdoor basketball courts, athletic fields, an accessible playground, two picnic shelters, and the Derick G.S. Davis Center. The Davis Center hosts an afterschool program, athletic programs, programs for youth, teens, adults, and seniors, and the Veterans Creative Arts Program.

Maides Park has been home to several different kinds of gardens over the years, but it has not hosted a vegetable garden since 2021. With assistance from the Garden Club grant, Parks and Recreation staff plan to install a long-lasting, multi-purpose garden that can be used for programming. The garden will be maintained by Davis Center staff and participants.
