Attachment #1: Resolution; Attachment #2: Updated Code of Ethics; Attachment #3: APPENDIX A; Attachment #4: 2018 Code of Ethics |
PURPOSE:
Legislative changes to the North Carolina General Statutes within the past several years require that the Wilmington City Council’s Code of Ethics be revised and updated.
BACKGROUND:
N.C.G.S. §160A-86 requires local governments to adopt a resolution or policy containing a code of ethics. Wilmington City Council adopted a Code of Ethics on November 2, 2010, and that document was last revised more than seven years ago on August 1, 2018. Since the last revision, multiple laws affecting the Code of Ethics have changed, including the codification of Chapter 160D, which addresses ethical issues related to zoning, planning, and land use items. As a result, it is necessary to update City Council’s code of ethics to be consistent with current state law.
