Attachment #1: Resolution

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this resolution is to express opposition to the expansion of Chemours’ Fayetteville Works Facility and urge Chemours to engage in meaningful dialogue with affected communities, disclose all relevant environmental data, and prioritize the health and safety of North Carolinians over corporate expansion.

BACKGROUND:

The Chemours Company and its predecessor, DuPont, have a documented history of releasing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including GenX, into the Cape Fear River and surrounding environment, contaminating the drinking water supply for over 500,000 North Carolinians, including residents of Wilmington. These discharges have resulted in significant public health concerns, environmental degradation, and economic burdens on local governments and residents who have had to invest in costly water treatment upgrades and health monitoring. Chemours has applied for an air permit and a Clean Water Act discharge permit to dramatically expand its Fayetteville operations. Chemours’ proposed expansion risks increasing PFAS emissions and further jeopardizing the health and safety of North Carolina families.
