PURPOSE:
The purpose of this resolution is to authorize the City Manager to enter into a contract for the replacement Cameron Park and Kennedy Park playgrounds that have exceeded their life cycles.
BACKGROUND:
Wilmington has 26 playgrounds, and 13 of them are over 15 years old. The repair and replacement of equipment and parts depend on the manufacturer’s instructions, but generally playgrounds are replaced every 15 years. The playgrounds at both Cameron and Kennedy Parks were installed in 2001, 24 years ago, and the equipment at those playgrounds has far exceeded the equipment life cycle, requiring replacement.
Funding is available in the Parks and Recreation Capital Maintenance Fund for FY25 for three playground replacements: Wallace Park, Cameron Park, and Kennedy Park. The resolution for the replacement of Wallace Park was already approved at the December 3, 2024, City Council Meeting.
Playgrounds are maintained on a routine basis and monthly inspections are conducted following the Consumer Product Safety Commission Public Playground Safety Handbook guidelines.
budget
BUDGET IMPACT:
The budget impact is $339,739.00 to the Parks and Recreation Capital Maintenance Fund (5CRPK25015).
