PURPOSE

The purpose of this resolution is to authorize the City Manager to apply for a Governor’s Highway Safety Program FY27 BikeSafe Regional Coordinator Grant in the amount of five thousand dollars ($5,000).

BACKGROUND:

BikeSafe NC is an initiative of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program (“GHSP”) in partnership with law enforcement agencies and the motorcycle community to be proactive in reducing crashes and fatalities in North Carolina. BikeSafe Regional Coordinators are responsible for promoting BikeSafe NC and traffic safety with law enforcement agencies and residents in their region. The Wilmington Police Department has been invited to apply for the Regional Coordinator position for the Southern Region (Zone 5), currently held by the Jacksonville Police Department. This position will alternate every couple of years between the agencies involved.

The Wilmington Police Department will use the five thousand dollars ($5,000) in grant funding to support its role as Regional Coordinator for the GHSP’s BikeSafe NC initiative, which includes rider training and assessments, coordination with other law enforcement agencies, and providing educational outreach regarding motorcycle safety. No local match is required for this program.
