PURPOSE:
Attached for your consideration is an ordinance that would reduce the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph on the portion of SR 2782, Wrightsville Avenue, between Military Cutoff Road and Southerland Avenue. This proposed change is at the request of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (“NCDOT”).
BACKGROUND:
Based on its investigation, NCDOT recommends their existing 45 mph speed limit ordinance (1067755) be repealed on Wrightsville Ave. between Military Cutoff Road and Southerland Avenue. As the road is maintained by NCDOT and is within the City of Wilmington municipal limits, a concurring ordinance is required.
At the May 6, 2014, Wilmington City Council meeting, the portion of Wrightsville Avenue between Southerland Avenue and Eastwood Rd was reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph in a similar manner.
Approval of this action will result in the entirety of SR 2782, Wrightsville Avenue (Military Cutoff Road to Eastwood Road), being subjected to the statutory speed limit ordinance of 35 mph. A map describing the road sections and the requested speed limit reduction is attached as Exhibit 4.
