Attachment #1: Resolution

PURPOSE

This resolution authorizes funding that will allow WPD to begin the transition from police shotguns to patrol rifles with the purchase of approximately 90 weapons, accompanying accessories, cases, and mounts.

BACKGROUND:

The WPD currently issues Remington 870 12-gauge shotguns to officers in addition to their handguns. The best practice and industry standard has shifted to patrol rifles as the preferred weapon due to improved accuracy, increased effective range, and heightened officer control. This transition will enable more comprehensive and adaptable responses, strengthening both officer effectiveness and overall community and officer safety.

budget

BUDGET IMPACT:

The total overall cost is $510,120 for 180 rifles, which will be implemented over a two-year period. Funds in the amount of $255,060 exist in our FY26 operating budget to cover the purchase of 90 rifles, accessories, cases, and mounts. The remaining $255,060 will be included in the FY27 proposed budget.
