PURPOSE:

The purpose of the resolution is to give Council the ability to determine whether to grant the owner an additional 180 days for the repair or demolition of the dwelling at 1115 S 5th Avenue.

BACKGROUND:

On June 4, 2024, City Council passed an ordinance directing the Housing Inspector to vacate, close, and repair or demolish the dwelling located at 1115 S. 5th Avenue. City Council granted the owner 180 days to repair or demolish the dwelling, with an opportunity to receive an additional 180 days to complete any necessary repairs or demolition.

The Housing Inspector has been in contact with the owner and has made referrals for the owner to partner agencies without success.  On December 16, 2024, the Housing Inspector inspected the property to find no substantial improvements to the dwelling, aside from the interior trash being removed.

RECOMMENDATION / ACTION REQUESTED:

Staff recommends denial of the resolution granting an additional 180 days. The effect of a denial of the resolution would be to allow the Housing Inspector to proceed under the terms of the original order to repair or demolish the dwelling.
